At the Hillview Residence, Halflants + Pichette designed a modern U-shaped home centered on a long linear pool that defines both the architecture and the landscape. The master suite occupies the west wing, while guest bedrooms are elevated in the east wing, creating a series of visual connections across the courtyard. The two-story living and dining area links these wings, forming the social heart of the home and reinforcing the clarity of its layout.
Views are layered throughout the residence. From the master suite, sightlines extend beneath the elevated guest wing, while those upper rooms open toward long views that pass over the lower roofline. This interlocking geometry produces both privacy and connection, ensuring that every space feels integrated within the courtyard and its changing light.

Inspired by Sarasota’s modern architectural lineage, particularly Paul Rudolph’s 1953 Umbrella House, the Hillview Residence incorporates an aluminum canopy composed of closely spaced members. This structure filters sunlight into dappled patterns across the pool and terraces, creating a two-story outdoor living room that is both open and protected. Above, the canopy defines a quieter space for the roof terrace, maintaining lightness and continuity in form.
Circulation moves in a deliberate loop through the residence. From the dining room, residents can ascend a switchback stair, cross a bridge to the studio, step onto the shaded terrace, and return to the main level by an exterior circular stair. This rhythm of movement adds variety and discovery to daily life. The Hillview Residence illustrates how Halflants + Pichette bring precision, restraint, and livability to Sarasota custom home design—merging modern clarity with the subtropical landscape that defines the region.
