Testimonials

Hear From Academic
Scholars, Authors, and Clients

“I love your work!” — said while pointing to Michael Halflants, FAIA, during a discussion about the firm's ongoing architectural work in downtown Clearwater.
Tom CruiseActor
"The quality of design throughout Halflants + Pichette's body of work is truly outstanding. Their 50 AIA design awards — capped by the AIA Florida Medal of Honor for Design — reflect a success rate rarely achieved even by the most celebrated members of our profession. Their sensitivity to the semi-tropical environment, creation of a sense of place, and mastery of design-build set them apart."
Martin J Harm, Ph.D., FAIADean Emeritus | Cal Poly State University
"Halflants + Pichette is one of the very best design firms in the region. The Solstice House alone demonstrates their exceptional ability to interpret a site — mediating between land and sea, land and sky — while satisfying every programmatic need. The firm is emerging as a leader in the discipline well beyond this region."
Jin baekProfessor, Seoul National University
"John treated us as if we were clients on a multi-million dollar project. He suggested bold moves but never pushed — he showed us examples and let us decide. Once underway, he was always accessible and responsive. It was a pleasure, and we would recommend him without hesitation."
Penny Deitch Client
"Halflants and Pichette draw on the Sarasota School while bringing a broader international sensibility to the work. The Solstice House builds on local traditions without mimicking the masters that came before. I have no doubt the work coming out of this partnership will be of the highest quality."
Craig Borum Professor | University of Michigan
"What impresses me most is that Halflants + Pichette build upon the modern tradition without reducing it to tricks and signs. They demonstrate a rare ability to interpret, transform, and assimilate that tradition into work unique to each situation. The Schrock House is a tremendous promise of more excellent work to come."
Ron DulaneyAssociate Professor | University of West Virginia
"Halflants + Pichette's work is uncompromisingly contemporary and forward-looking while remaining deeply aware of the mid-century Sarasota School. His projects engage their context through carefully choreographed spatial and material experiences. I consider his work the third generation of the Sarasota School."
Robert MacleodDirector + Professor | University of South Florida
"Halflants + Pichette's work is strongly influenced by international modernism and profoundly rooted in the subtropical vernacular of South Florida — producing design that is consistently responsive to context, function, and programmatic constraints."
Rene Davids, FAIAProfessor | University of California, Berkeley
"Michael Halflants combines scholarly depth with the technical and business knowledge of a practitioner. In an age of digital media saturation, the astute rigor and discipline that Halflants + Pichette achieves in its built work is perhaps the most inspiring thing about the practice."
Santiago PerezSenior Lecturer | University of Western Australia
"Michael Halflants' work shows the same care and dedication as his teaching — borne out by a remarkable number of professional design awards. He serves as an excellent example of what every member of our profession should aspire to achieve."
Dwight Holmes, FAIAPrincipal | Holmes Architects
"There are not two more tenacious and creative architects in the Sarasota area. They want your project to be exceptional — breathtakingly beautiful. And it will be."
Diane LaneClient
"We've just moved into a condo designed by this firm. The buildings in Sarasota's Rosemary District are architecturally significant and will become more so over time. With roots in the mid-century Sarasota School, our building is visually distinctive and contributes to the re-imagining of the district."
