For the University of South Florida in Tampa, Halflants + Pichette designed a modern physical education facility that integrates wellness, recreation, and academics into one cohesive environment. The project brings together athletic performance and architectural design to create a building that connects students to both activity and place. Positioned to align with the surrounding campus, the facility enhances pedestrian flow and frames views of nearby green spaces, linking indoor and outdoor experiences across multiple levels.
The layout organizes circulation for clarity and efficiency, with direct paths between classrooms, gyms, and outdoor recreation zones. Common areas encourage informal gathering and interaction, reinforcing the social dimension of campus life. As both an academic and recreational hub, the facility supports flexibility, with spaces adaptable to future programs and evolving student needs.

The design responds to Tampa’s subtropical climate through a combination of shade, airflow, and energy-efficient systems. Broad roof overhangs and covered walkways provide comfort and reduce heat gain, while large glazed façades bring natural light into interior spaces. These transparent elements balance durability with openness, ensuring the building feels active, welcoming, and connected to the campus beyond.
Halflants + Pichette’s work on the USF Physical Education facility demonstrates their expertise in Tampa institutional and commercial architecture. By combining academic function with recreational design, the project strengthens the physical and social fabric of the university. The result is a facility that supports education, health, and community, reflecting the firm’s commitment to creating spaces that engage both people and place.
