From Tampa to Venice: Designing Custom Homes That Feel Like They Belong
Architecture that belongs starts with the land beneath it. At Halflants + Pichette, we believe every custom home should reflect its environment: not just in style, but in how it functions, feels, and lasts over time. Across Florida’s Gulf Coast, from Tampa to Venice, we’ve designed homes that are deeply tied to their sites, whether it’s an elevated lot on Anna Maria Island or a waterfront parcel on Longboat Key. These are homes made for real people, real weather, and real living.
Architecture Rooted in Place, Not Preconception
Design isn’t about forcing a style onto a site. We begin by listening—first to the client, then to the land. Is it coastal? Shaded? Exposed to sun and salt air? What are the wind patterns, elevation requirements, and views? From there, the form evolves. Each design is original, shaped by the conditions of the property and the needs of the people who will live there.
Anna Maria Residence: A Coastal Home That Frames the Gulf

Set on a narrow, 56-foot-wide parcel facing the Gulf of Mexico, this 3,500-square-foot home rises a full story above grade to meet flood codes. That requirement became a design opportunity. Instead of a steep transition, we created a stepped sequence of outdoor spaces: an elevated pool, a raised wood deck, and broad steps down to the yard.
Inside, two double-height volumes bring natural light deep into the home and create open sightlines through to the Gulf. An upper-level office overlooks the living area and pool. The entire house is connected vertically by a continuous stair, tying the outdoor and indoor spaces together.
We used operable glass systems for natural ventilation, deep roof overhangs for shade, and durable finishes to withstand coastal conditions. The result is a bright, modern residence that balances privacy, openness, and resilience.

Bayshore Residence: Waterfront Living in Tampa Bay

Located along Bayshore Boulevard in St. Petersburg, this 5,500-square-foot home faces Tampa Bay. Like many waterfront homes in Florida, it had to meet strict flood codes. We elevated the structure and designed deep terraces to bring usable outdoor space back to ground level.
The interior revolves around a central double-height living room that opens to the water. A slightly elevated dining area provides visual separation while keeping an open layout. Large glazing connects the indoors to the bay, and skylights bring daylight into the heart of the home.
The roof overhang is a defining feature. On the bay side, it projects over 30 feet to shade the terrace year-round. It folds down on one edge to block distant industrial views while preserving openness toward the horizon.
Recognitions:
- AIA Gulf Coast Design Award (2014, 2012)
- AIA Tampa Bay Unbuilt Design Award
Longboat Key Residence: Blending Structure and Bay Views

On a trapezoidal site facing Sarasota Bay, the Longboat Key Residence uses an L-shaped plan to define a shaded courtyard with a raised pool and spa. This private outdoor room is the center of daily life, linking the bay to the house.
A continuous skylight runs through the home above a glass bridge, connecting the entry to the dining area and drawing light into the core. Slender steel columns support a rooftop terrace above the porch, while a sculptural perforated aluminum stair links the pool area to the roof.
The overhang is engineered for performance and elegance. Steel beams and concrete supports form a cantilevered roof that shades the lower decks. The structure steps down toward the water, echoing the lines of the shoreline.

Why Regional Knowledge Matters in Custom Florida Homes
Designing homes for Florida’s Gulf Coast requires more than creativity. It demands technical expertise in elevation, storm resilience, and building codes. We understand:
- How to navigate local permitting in cities like Tampa, Sarasota, and Venice
- The importance of material selection for salt air and humidity
- Wind load requirements in coastal zones
- Shading and ventilation strategies for energy efficiency
Our relationships with builders, inspectors, and municipalities streamline the process—and help us build homes that meet or exceed code.
Design That Lasts: What Clients Can Expect
Every Halflants + Pichette project begins with a conversation, and every detail is tailored to your needs. We offer:
- A design process that values clarity, proportion, and comfort
- Smart, site-specific layouts—not templates
- Outdoor rooms that feel natural and connected to the home
- Structures engineered to endure Florida’s climate
We don’t impose a “look.” We build homes that make sense—homes that feel like they’ve always belonged on their site.
