F.W. WOOLWORTH CO.

Originally constructed in 1910, the F.W. Woolworth Building remains one of downtown Clearwater’s most recognizable commercial landmarks. Once home to the iconic Great Five Cent Store, the building served Cleveland Street for more than half a century and became part of the city’s everyday architectural memory.

The restoration returns the building to its original character, recovering the clarity, proportion, and retail presence that defined its historic façade. Through careful rehabilitation, Halflants + Pichette reestablished the building’s identity as a prominent commercial anchor—preserving its past while renewing its role in the downtown fabric.

Project Type
Historical Preservaton

The F.W. Woolworth Building restoration is a careful reclamation of the building’s architectural identity. Decades of paint and stucco were removed to reveal the original ochre brick façade, allowing the historic material character of the building to reemerge. Thousands of bricks were preserved and restored with historically matched mortar and materials, reinforcing the depth, texture, and craftsmanship of the original construction.

At the street level, the historic storefront was reestablished with a new system that reflects the original proportions while meeting current hurricane standards. The recreated gold-lettered “F.W. Woolworth Co.” sign restores a defining element of the Cleveland Street façade and reconnects the building to its commercial history. Behind the restored exterior, structural upgrades and modern systems were carefully integrated, allowing the landmark to perform for the future while preserving the character of its past.
